Edited by Brigadiers F Kempster and H C E Westropp, published by Sherratt and Hughes, this is a historical record of the response for volunteers to join the British Army in the First World War. In particular, the encouragment to join locally recruited battalions from specific areas within a city and/or trade, the 'Pals' battalions, is reflected in this massive volume. All the initial recruits to the 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd Service Battalions of the Manchester Regiment are listed and photographed by platoon. In addition their are lists of men from local government and companies who were serving with the Royal Navy and other Army units. By the time this book was published, many of the men of these eight battalions had been killed or wounded during the Battale of the Somme that commenced on 1 July 1916. Badly worn, torn and soiled red cloth boards, no dj, over 800 pages, numerous group photographs.
