Mao Tse Tung (or Zedong). (1893-1976) Founder of the People`s Republic of China; one of the most prominent Communist theoreticians. After a long civil war with Chinese nationalist forces led by Chiang Kai-shek, Mao and the Communists took over most of mainland China in 1949. In 1966 Mao launched the Cultural Revolution to regain control of the party after his Great Leap Forward (1958) resulted in some 20 to 30 million people dying of famine and Mao`s temporary withdrawal from power. During the Cultural Revolution, millions were persecuted, especially those with any taint of intellectualism, and as many as half a million people died. In 1969 Mao regained his party leadership and in 1970 was named supreme commander of China and the army.
