Superb lot of 10 antique 18th century copper engravings depicting marble work, all marked "Benard direxit." Benard worked on Diderot's monumental encyclopedia, and these prints are from a book of that period. The series is titled "Marbrerie, Compartimens simples de Carreaux de differentes formes." There are 48 figures, including 3 large sheets of plans of sections of architecture in France-- Choeur de l"Eglise de Notre Dame de Paris, Plan du Pave du Val de Grace, Partie du plan du Pave compris sous le Dome des Invalides. Prints range in size from 8 3/4"H x 6 1/4"W plus margins, to 9" x 13" plus margins for larger prints. All with bright ink impressions and clean paper. This item is guaranteed to be as described.
