Three page, typed, autograph letter on A4 'Conqueror' laid paper, embossed, 'ER' on the top left hand corners, from Margaret Thatcher, Prime Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the Conservative Government of the time, dated 17th December 1979. She talks about the Miners Strike and benefit payments, showing some concern for the families of the striking miners, pointing out, in reply to a letter raising concerns about the public purse being used to subsidise industrial unrest, 'In practise, few strikers qualify for benefit for their families.' She also shows her legendary grasp of facts and figures and briskly reassures the correspondent that matters are in hand and under control, as she saw them. Signed in her own hand on the third of three pages, this is a rare document of a very troubled time in Britain's history, when families and communities were divided, the Police, the Army and the Government were battling to reduce the Unions and the Coal Industry . ! 30% of the proceeds of this auction will go to Survival International, a charity that supports people living outside our 'society,' in remote areas, hitherto roadless and innocent of capital investment. The concept of 'society' was denied by Mrs (later Baroness) Thatcher. Further details, including the addressee and the circumstances of the correspondence available read more
