You're bidding on a stunning and unique piece of early mid-century jewelry executed by Margot van Voorhies Carr of Taxco. Margot was one of the leading silversmiths and artists of the Taxco movement in the Mid 20th Century and often considered to be the the best at fusing enamel and metal. This piece is from the collection of Donna Fedirko of Cleveland and has never been shown outside her collection. As quoted from the book "Mexican Silver", by Morrill and Berk, "...if the pieces were to be enameled, they were sent to the women in the workshop. when pressed into the dye, the silver for the champleve jewelry had recesses for the enamel which were 1 to 2mm lower than the surface. the women applied the enamel with tiny brushes according to margot 's drawings. each color had to be apart from the other,a s the enamels would not mix to create a new shade. many of margot's pieces had gold leaf applied beneath the transparent enamel to give depth and brilliance to the color. the women were also responsible for firing the enamel jewelry. the pieces were fired at very high temperatures, 1400-1600 F, high enough to melt the enamel into the silver, but not melt the silver. after enameling, the pieces would go back to the men..." Please note that this piece has gorgeous gold, orange, lime and emerald green colors in the enamel, offset by black enameling around those colors. Naturally, the photos cannot do complete justice to this work. In addition to the remarkable artistry and beauty, Margot's design incorporates a very graceful versatility by having the drop pendant made detachable to wear as a brooch. Hallmarks: "Margot", "Taxco", Design # "5899", an eagle with the # "16" and surrounding "Hecho en Mexico", all consistent with the period. Measurements - Pin- 1 and 7/8" X 1 and 3/8" Necklace (w/o pin) - 11", dropped, 22" total Combined length - 12 and 7/8 Links (22qty!!!) - 1" (with connecting loop) X 1/4" (at its widest, or black enamel part) Condition- The pendant is in near perfect condition.
