VINTAGE MARGOT DE TAXCO MEXICAN SILVER ENAMEL PENDANT/BROOCH Design #5752 ~ Signed & Marked ~ Best Collector Quality WISHING YOU AND YOURS A HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!!! DESCRIPTION: This is a STUPENDOUS sterling silver and champleve enamel pendant/brooch that was hand wrought in Taxco, Mexico, after 1948, by silver maestra, MARGOT van VOORHIES CARR (?-1985) of MARGOT de TAXCO. Margot moved to Mexico City with friends from San Francisco in 1937. She was introduced to Antonio Castillo by Antonio's sister, Maria. Antonio and Margot married while Antonio was still working for William Spratling's Las Delicias . Margot would design jewelry that Antonio would produce at night ~ these pieces sold so well that Antonio left William Spratling and Las Delicias and opened LOS CASTILLO with Margot and his brothers. Margot and Antonio divorced after about 10 years and Margot opened MARGOT DE TAXCO in 1948. "As the Stars are to the Night, So are Jewels to the Woman" was on her calling card ~ this statement represents Margot's dedication to designing classical and feminine art-to-wear jewelry that is elegantly timeless. Penny Morrill, well known author and one of the world's leading authorities on vintage Mexican silver has completed her book, Margot Van Voorhies ~ The Art of Mmexican Enamelwork ~ you can purchase this "must have" collector's art book online or at your favorite book store. Margot de Taxco jewelry is a wonderful investment and the value will only appreciate with time. This spectacular pendant/brooch is masterfully crafted in a classically elegant motif that has a gorgeous art nouveau flair! Margot consistently marked her jewelry with a design number and her sterling silver and enamel pieces were numbered 5109 through 5922 ~ this pendant is design #5752 and is known as the "spiraling circle" motif. The same pendant (in black and white) is featured in Ms. Morrill's new book referenced in the paragraph above, on page 83, photo plate IV-5. The round silver pendant (that may be also worn alone as a brooch) has sterling spiraling circle designs that are inlaid with jet black champleve enamel, gold champleve enamel and bronze champleve enamel ~ the gold and bronze enamel inlay have decorative dot designs in the silver that shine through the enamel. These colors are so classic and elegant ~ this necklace will go with everything! The locking pin clasp on the back of the pendant works as it should. The pendant has a permanent hook style bail. I'm including a vintage Mexican silver chain that I had my jeweler to customize so that the pendant fits perfectly. The necklace is quite substantial, weighing almost 60 grams and consists of thick silver oval links with gold vermeil bead accents ~ since the pendant also has silver and gold, it looks fabulous on the necklace! The closure is a hook closure with sterling safety catch. Margot is known for her expertise in champleve enamel work and this pendant is no exception! Vintage MARGOT art-to-wear pieces are becoming harder to find on the market and are sought by serious vintage Taxco jewelry collectors worldwide ~ this is an authentic VINTAGE Margot de Taxco piece, not a new piece made from Margot's jewelry molds. This exceptional pendant/brooch is extremely well made and crafted in a sophisticated design ~ it is heirloom, collector and museum quality ~ simply, THE BEST!!! SIZE: Pendant/brooch: 2-1/2" long, 2-1/2" wide and weight is 45 grams. Necklace: Inside circumference when closed is approximately 24-1/2", width is 5/16", and weight is 57.8 grams. Total width of pendant/brooch and necklace is 102.8 grams. CONDITION : Excellent vintage condition ~ no dents or dings to the silverwork ~ there is an irregularity and slight color variance in the enamel at the bottom left hand corner of the pendant (please see last photo)/it is not noticeable when worn/the rest of the enamel is in excellent condition ~ minor surface scratches consistent with loving wear and age (and actually desirable on vintage pieces)... read more
