DESCRIPTION : This is an EXTRAORDINARY sterling silver and enamel necklace that was handwrought in Taxco, Mexico, after 1948, by silver maestra, MARGOT van VOORHIES CARR (?-1985) of MARGOT de TAXCO. Margot moved to Mexico City with friends from San Francisco in 1937. She was introduced to Antonio Castillo by Antonio's sister, Maria. Antonio and Margot married while Antonio was still working for William Spratling's Las Delicias . Margot would design jewelry that Antonio would produce at night ~ these pieces sold so well that Antonio left William Spratling and Las Delicias and opened LOS CASTILLO with Margot and his brothers. Margot and Antonio divorced after about 10 years and Margot opened MARGOT DE TAXCO in 1948. "As the Stars are to the Night, So are Jewels to the Woman" was on her calling card ~ this statement represents Margot's dedication to designing classical and feminine art-to-wear jewelry that is elegantly timeless. This spectacular necklace is masterfully crafted in a timelessly classic design that has a great art deco look ~ Margot consistently marked her jewelry with a design number and her silver with enamel pieces were numbered 5109 through 5922 ~ the design of this necklace is 5899. The center of the necklace has two large silver links with intertwining scroll designs that have the most magnificent Champlevé enamel in gold and black with gold confetti. T are seven rectangular links with black enamel and gold confetti on either side of the center links. The links are connected with silver cylindrical links that are part of the design which gives this necklace beautiful uninterrupted design flow. The clasp is a tongue and box closure that works perfectly and closes with a crisp 'click'. Vintage MARGOT art-to-wear pieces are becoming more and more scarce and are sought by serious collectors from all over the world ~ this is an authentic VINTAGE Margot de Taxco necklace, not a new piece made from Margot's jewelry molds. This necklace is extremely well made and crafted in a sophisticated, elegant design ~ it is museum/heirloom/collector quality ~ simply, THE BEST!!! SIZE: Inside circumference when closed is 16-1/2", width/drop in front is 1-3/4", and weight is 49 grams. CONDITION : Superior vintage condition ~ no dents/dings to silverwork ~ no chipped/cracked/missing enamel ~ no damage noted~ just about PERFECT! HALLMARKS : "MARGOT DE TAXCO, STERLING, MADE IN MEXICO, 5899 (design number)" and the Eagle 16 assay mark (hallmark is worn but is totally legible) . MARGOT VAN VOORHIES CARR/MARGOT DE TAXCO and this hallmark (photo V-7) are shown on pages 205-207 of Bille Hougart's highly respected source book, The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks (2006 edition).
