This is a perfect condition, never used, Marilyn Monroe serving tray of the period. It is not a reproduction . The colors are vibrant and unfaded. First came the calendars then the litho Trays. Circa 1950-53. This is one of the two most famous images of the 20th century. She was only 22 years old when she posed on May 27,1949 Marilyn Monroe before her great fame . The colors are vivid. Before posing for her famous calendar shots, Marilyn had turned done many offers to pose nude. It seems she accepted, only when her need was dire and immediate. Her contracts with Columbia and Twentieth Century Fox had not been renewed. She was out of work and had a certain level of lifestyle to maintain. The $50.00 she was paid, was exactly the amount she needed to get her car back which had been impounded. Around this time, nude photos of Monroe began to surface, taken by photographer Tom Kelley when she had been struggling for work. Prints were bought by Hugh Hefner and, in December 1953, appeared in the first edition of Playboy. To the dismay of Fox, Monroe decided to publicly admit it was indeed her in the pictures. In March 1952, the saying "bad publicity is good publicity" took on new meaning when Marilyn became the object of attention in the midst of the scandalous "Calendar Caper". The pictures that were taken years earlier by Tom Kelley became a hit during the early 1950s. They adorned men's walls around the United States and Marilyn Monroe became a national sex symbol. It wasn't long before the identity of the girl posing nude was discovered to be Marilyn. The press seized on the emerging scandal and Marilyn's career was on the verge of disaster. She knew that the uproar could lead to the cancellation of her contract with the studio and she had to figure out a way out of the mess she found herself in. In a brilliant public relations move, Marilyn decided to come clean about the calendar and her motivation behind doing it by arranging an interview with a popular news reporter named Aline Mosby. She confided to Mosby that she posed in the nude only because she was broke and needed the money to survive. Marilyn's well-rehearsed sad story doused the scandalous flames that almost consumed her and instead lead to public sympathy nationwide. After all, who could stay angry with such a beautiful girl who was forced to exploit her body in order to survive? Also included is a wonderful complimentary piece that is ultra rare. These uncut Photolitho Coaster Steel Strips, circa 1953 are simply fabulous, and an incredible example that displays fantastically with the serving tray. The full-color litho steel strip is in a very scarce uncut form, and measures 31"x5". These were pressed into the popular Marilyn coasters/ashtrays of the time.
