I have a beautiful early 19th C. mariner's octant/sextant with ebony frame, _____ graduated arc, and bronze-brass fittings. The arc measures from 0 to 95 degrees. The _____ plate on the cross bar between the two limbs is in excellent shape. The center of the _____ degree's scale between 50 and 45 degrees is inscribed in script "SBR" identifying this instrument as that of Spencer, Browning & Rust, of London. The brass index arm is 15 7/8 inches long. The horizon mirror is on an adjustable turntable and can be rotated by two knobs one of which locates the mirror's position. The _____ scale, reads from right to left from 0 to 20 arc minutes. The two hole peep sight with "flap", and three sun shades date this instrument around the turn of the century, or Ca 1800-1820. What does _____ mean? It's a word that eBay doesn't allow on behalf of extinct animals unless you can prove you have an antique. I haven't figured out that process yet. It is like scrimshaw. CONDITION: The _____ inlay on the degrees scale, and hardware are in excellent condition, with a nice patina of age is in exceptional quality overall. The _____inlay on the scale is cracked on the right side. The index and horizon mirrors have long ago degraded. If desired, resilvering is inexpensive and available through most mirror shops. It has three filter frames that can be moved from below index to between the two half mirrors. Two of the three filter frames are cracked but in no danger of falling out. The ebony frame has a crack near the index and horizon mirrors. Then down on the left side of the degree scale has been repaired. I tried to picture these. THE CASE: The "stair step, or keystone" case is in good solid condition. I'm not if this is the original case. It appears to be old judging from the hinges, but I think someone stained it on the inside. I will be shipping this piece in a 14" x 14" x 14" box with tissue, bubble wrap, and styrofoam peanuts at a shipping weight of 7-8 lbs. When listing, ebay has you choose shipping weights. For example: 1-2 lbs., 2-3 lbs., 3-4 lbs. etc. for the shipping calculator. Please ask questions and I will do my best to help you. All my items are used unless described and sold "as is". Thank-you for looking! Happy Bidding!
