Size of Image 20 3/4" X 14 1/4" (sheet size: plate marks at 13 1/2" X 10 1/8") Condition In overall very good to excellent condition with some slight paper toning around the periphery the result of this print having lived most of its life in a frame. Description Although he was born and trained in England, Mark Catesby [1683-1749] was undoubtedly the major figure in American ornithology in the 18th century. Catesby's The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands first published between 1731-43, is credited with being the only attempt of the period to cover the entire natural history of a North American colony. A fascinating, rather whimsical, interpretation of flowers, birds and animals - perhaps even a slight smirk can be seen on some of his subjects. Rather than working from reports and specimens sent overseas to Europe, as most authors of the period did, Catesby spent many years in America collecting and recording data for his publications.
