While still in high school, Mark held down 2 jobsâe¦at a local florist and right next door at a donut shop. Never satisfied with the status quo, Mark earned the praises of his bosses by taking simple fillings & toppings at the donut shop and making various "Specials" that were not on the menu, and always selling them out. Mark used that same creativity at the Florist by designing arrangements with lots of unusual materials, creating designs not common for the day, but increasingly popular among the shop's clientele. After 3 years of college, the entrepreneurial bug bit Mark and he started his company, selling silk flowers and gradually expanding to include decorative home accents along with wonderful & unusual Christmas décor. When asked recently how he got started with his now famous collection of Fairies and Santa's, Mark shared this story:As far back as I can remember, my mother used to tell me bedtime stories. My very favorite was a little poem, which I have recently come to learn, is actually a prayer. I always called it "Little Boy kneels", which is about a little boy saying his prayers before bedtime. It is a charming little chant and my mother always told it to me with such drama and exuberance. Its actual title is called "Christopher Robin."Ever the inquisitive one, I was always asking why Little Boy kneels can remember something's so well and on the other hand also be so forgetful. As the holidays would approach, I would constantly be asking my mother the questions only an inquisitive 4 or 5 year old would ask. Surely, I could not understand how Santa Claus could fly all around the world, with presents for everyone and everywâe¦and get it all done in one night! Pretty soon, mom had a Fairy to answer all my little questions. And she answered them with the same drama & exuberance she used when telling me my favorite bedtime story, "Little Boy kneels". "It's the Stocking Fairy who helps Santa fill all the stockings." "The Poinsettia Fairy is who makes all the red poinsettia flowers bloom in the cold December snow." "The Candy Cane Fairy makes all the candy canes red & white because those are Santa's favorite colors." The Snowflake Fairy sprinkles the sky with his magic and all the snowflakes fall to the ground." "But how come I can't see the Fairies mommie?" I would ask her. "You just have to believe that they are out t," she would say. "They are so tiny and so quick, that in the blink of an eye, they're gone."In 1989, when she died prematurely from cancer, I understood clearly what she meant about "âe¦in the blink of an eye, they're gone." I understood that just because you can't see something, doesn't mean that it does not exist. I found that life is not only precious, it is also sacred. The magic of life that surrounds us each and every day is t for us to reach out and find.Six or seven years after he lost his mother, opportunity knocked on Mark's door through one of the factories he works with. "They had some charming little Santa's & elves they wanted me to try, with which my company found much success. About a year later, I decided I had the power to reach out ...
