Clemens, Samuel L. (1835 - 1910). 2pp folded lettersheet, 4 x 7`, n.p., n.d. Matted and framed with photo of Clemens, to 11 x 17.5` overall. Addressed to `Mrs. Gerhardt` with a request that her husband sign the enclosed papers. He relates that he is sailing on a French steamer and would like to procure a letter of credit on European banks. He further notes that he is addressing this to her because he has known her longer than he has known her husband. Possibly from the mid-1890`s when Clemens embarked on a lecture tour to try to pay off his debts. His first trip to Europe in 1867 resulted in his first book, Innocents Abroad, and apparently the next couple trips were with his family. He was relatively unknown in 1867, and probably would have mentioned his family in the note had they been with him. The banking connection also suggests the later trip, at which point Clemens was in serious financial straits.
