"The Writings of Mark Twain". SIGNED Limited Edition. 35 volume collection published by Gabriel Wells, in New York - 1923. Definitive Edition SIGNED by the author as "S. L. Clemens/Mark Twain" on the front fly-leaf of Volume I. With the explanatory note on the facing page signed by Twain's biographer, Albert Bigelow Paine, stating: "This fly-leaf was signed by Mark Twain in 1906 in anticipation of the present definitive edition of his works." This set is stated number 658 of 1024 copies. The two volumes of Twain's Autobiography are not included, but these were published two year after the set, and are not an integral part of the collection. This is a beautiful, comprehensive collection including all of Twain's major works. Each of the 35 volumes have photogravure frontispieces and plates (including portraits) after drawings, paintings, etc. by E. W. Kemble, Howard Pyle, Dan Beard, W. H. W. Bicknell, P. Newell, J. Allen St. John, A. B. Frost, and others. The volumes are in the their original bindings: quarterbound in blue cloth over plain boards, with printed paper labels on the spines. The books are in very good overall condition, with just minor wear to the spines. The textblocks are in near fine condition, the pages are bright and fresh, the books appear unread.
