MARKING GAUGE, ENGLISH & HUBER, PATENTED??, UNIQUE This is a marking gauge that is fairly crudely labeled on the shaft "J. ENGLISH & H.& F.A. HUBER PATENT".In the Directory of American Toolmakers published by EAIA t is listed a firm called ENGLISH & HUBER that did business in Philadelphia, Pa during the period 1834-1842. The principles of this business were Joseph English, H. Huber & F.A. Huber. This business manufactured knives, leather tools and other. This gauge was certainly manufactured by this firm. Whether the gauge was ever patented or not is unknown to me. I have not found nor hunted for a patent, however the word "PATENT" does appear after the name cast on the shaft. This gauge is heavy and of all steel construction except for a small piece of brass that surrounds and holds the marking point in place. Gauge beam is 6 ½" long. I have never seen another or heard of another gauge from this manufacture. It is very early and if it is patented it would be one of the very earliest patented marking gauges. Pretty good shape but it is somewhat hard to beat up a solid chunk of steel. No rust or corrosion. Of course t is the usual owners initials but overall a nice and unique looking gauge.
