Up for bid is a vintage Märklin #4098/92/8 horizontal stationary steam engine from the 1940s or 1950s in virtually mint condition. I inherited this engine from my late father and have made no attempt to fire it up. I believe it to be in near mint condition, perhaps fired only once to test it when my father acquired it. For the past 40 years at least it has been stored in its original Märklin wooden box at the back of a bedroom closet and I see no evidence on the burner or stack of scorching, nor is there evidence of steam dripping or grease. The boiler and copper bands are not discolored from heat and the paint is unblemished. All the valves turn freely as does the flywheel, piston and centrifugal governor.The features of the Märklin #4098/92/8 are listed on the original 16-page German-French-English instruction booklet (included in this auction) as follows: Stove door Fire tube boiler 3-way cock Drain cock Water level gauge Steam whistle Pressure gauge Filler plug Steam dome Weighted safety valve Steam stop cock Centrifugal governor and driving cord Feed pump drive and cord pulley Flywheel with groove for driving cord Piston rod with piston Base Double-acting cylinder Oil cup Dynamo (#3392 - 2.5 V) Not being very familiar with these steam engines I am forced to borrow a description of a Märklin #4098/92/8 written by another eBayer last year in order to provide you with a bit more info on how this engine function (apologies to the original eBayer): The most important feature of this Marklin is its smokestack, which is not placed at the end of the fire box as is seen with many other engines. The Märklin engineers placed it to maximize the heat exchange. In the fashion of a true boiler she funnels the hot gas up and through the boiler. This design makes this boiler very efficient and allows for longer steaming. A lever control valve let's you control the steam from the boiler to the engine. This gives you full control to adjust the RPMs as needed. A drain cock, gives you easy draining and lets you adjust the flow of water, producing less spillage. A boiler feed water pump with bypass valve is fitted and driven from an eccentric cam on the crankshaft. This device allows continuous running and enables the boiler to be replenished with water while still being steamed. The Märklin #4098/92/8 also has a level control whistle and a pressure gauge. The twin vaporizing burners work on Meth/Alcohol or spirit heat. There are simulated guard rails around the engine mount and the boiler. Included with the engine is the original instruction booklet, a funnel, a small metal Märklin wrench, and a small metal hook of unknown function. In addition there is a small Märklin envelope containing small electrical bulbs and hand-labeled "for live steam driven dynamo" as well as CD-ROM containing a pdf file of the 1934 Märklin train and toy, which my father apparently used to research this and other Märklin products.I have attempted here to describe and illustrate this engine as accurately as possible. I believe it to be in near mint condition and that you will be entirely satisfied with its operation. It is offered here, however, "as is" and no returns will be accepted. It will be carefully wrapped and shipped in its original wooden box inside a larger and padded cardboard box.The engine and wooden box weigh a little over 19 lbs.
