HOWEVER, THIS ONE-OF-A-KIND "Norman Rockwell made famous" Clock was purchased at the Chicago famed State Street Store before all changes were complete. MARSHALL FIELD'S COLLECTIBLE CLOCK is a beautiful desk clock that features QUARTZ movement. As written on the back of the box: "The Marshall Field's Great Clock - a Chicago tradition for 100 years. The Great Clock at Marshall Field's State Street store was installed on November 26, 1897 at the corner of State Street and Washington Street. Mr. Marshall Field felt that Chicago needed a great clock that would signify as a meeting place, and it should be big enough to be seen for miles. On November 3, 1945, the clock was featured in a Norman Rockwell Saturday Evening Post cover. At this point it became a landmark to people across the country." This unique clock measures 7 1/2" tall and 5" wide. It comes in its original box. MARSHALL FIELD'S WAS SOLD AUGUST 30TH OF LAST YEAR, ENDING A SHOPPING ERA OF THE DAYS OF YESTERYEAR. This Clock is about as rare as you can get. Marshall Fields the department store, was - as many of you know - named after Mr. Fields himself. A retail store merchant in the same level of Mr. Montgomery Ward, Mr. Sears and Mr. Roebuck, etc. Having started out as a dry-goods clerk in Pittsfield, Mass., when he was only 16 years old, Field's quickly became a customer favorite. Five years later, in 1855, he moved to Chicago with a glowing recommendation from his boss and nearly $1,000 in savings. Eventually he would take control of the successful retail and wholesale operation owned by one Potter Palmer. When Mr. Palmer's health failed him, he offered Marshall Field and Levi Z. Leiter, a bookkeeper and colleague of Field's, a chance to buy his business. In time, the company became known as Field, Leiter & Co. and, later, Marshall Field & Co. It is that Mr. Madsen is at his best. He explains that Marshall Field catered to his customers-overwhelmingly women-with a style that few merchants ever equaled. In Victorian America, writes Mr. Madsen, un-escorted women were often unwelcome in city centers. But at Field's store, women were treated as royalty. Marshall Field's department store became symbol of elegance-affordable elegance for the prosperous middle classes. It eventually became, as well, the place for the women of Chicago to meet - and to meet in proper comfort. And speaking about meeting, the number is in the thousands of future couples Meeting UNDER the Clock - for that very special first time. Mr. Madsen says that prior to the installation of toilets in Field's store, women who spent the day shopping had now to turn. The Women's Gazette actually had to campaign in the 1870s for lavatories to be built in "hotels, restaurants, and tea shops. "Marshall Field's department store led the way.
