''Martha's Vineyard / Dukes County, Massachusetts.'' Published by B. Ashburton Tripp: Alexandria, Virginia. First edition. Early 20th century map features the Island of Martha's Vineyard in center; details include towns, roads, lighthouses, forests and waterways. The surrounding bodies of water are labeled and pictured, featuring sketches of naval boats and fantasy portraits of the four winds in each corner. Vignettes occupy the exterior of the central octagonal frame; maritime scenes in each corner, churches and lighthouses from the island along the sides. An inscription borders the entire scene. Inscription along bottom margin reads, ''This is the goodliest land we ever saw for it is replenished with fair fields and in them fragrant flowers.'' Inscription along side and top margins reads, '''We stood awhile like men ravished at the beautie and delicacie of the sweet soile; for besides rivers clear lakes of fresh water we saw meadows very large and hedged with stately groves – T was such an incredible store of vines we could not go for treading on them.' The Voyage of Bartholomew Gosnold – 1602.'' Map measuring 33.5'' x 27'' affixed with glue and nails to a .25'' plywood board of the same size. Paper rippled throughout due to attachment to plywood. Edges of map brittle resulting in chipping and slight tears along edges. Contains toning throughout, throuhgh not affecting this fanciful artistic depiction. Edges of plywood remain rough and uneven. Overall good condition.
