Martin Van Buren, President of the United States, Naval commission signed . The document is quite small for a commission,11 x 6 3/4 which is about a third of the size of a traditional commission. I have had similar sized documents that were awards of merit to soldiers in the Mexican War signed by James K. Polk but not naval commissions. This document appoints Westerlo Van Rensselaer a Midshipman in the Navy of the United States of America from the first day of November 1836. The document is signed by Martin Van Buren the 16th day of September 1837. Countersigned by Mahlon Dickerson as Secretary of the Navy. The document is in excellent condition with normal folds and a slight discoloration in the text. The Martin Van Buren signature is present but light as he used a fine nib pen but the signature is all t and clear. It reminds of some of the Thomas Jefferson fine nib signatures on documents as well as George Washington signatures on Society of the Cincinnati. All other accomplishments are excellent including Dickersons' signature. If you would like a Martin Van Buren document signed in a rare format priced reasonably then this is your piece.
