Hello! I am offering at auction a wonderful letter handwritten by the great Greer Garson. It is written on her personal blue stationary which has at the top - "memo from GREER GARSON" in red ink. It was written on June 26th, 1962 and sent to the legendary sports columnist Jim Murray. James Patrick Murray ( December 29 , 1919 - August 17 , 1998 ) was an American sportswriter at the Los Angeles Times from 1961 to 1998 . Many of his achievements include winning the Sportswriter of the Year award an astounding fourteen times. In 1990 , he won a Pulitzer Prize for Commentary for his 1989 columns, and the Baseball Hall of Fame awarded him the J. G. Taylor Spink Award in 1987 . One of his famous quotes about baseball was : "Baseball is a game w a curve is an optical illusion, a screwball can be a pitch or a person, stealing is legal and you can spit anyw you like except in the umpire's eye or on the ball." Murray must have been a favorite of Greer's. Her letter to him as he lay in the hospital is delightful, and must have cheered him up immensely. And who wouldn't have been cheered up in receiving such a personal missive from Greer Garson! The letter says: "To Mr. Jim Murray at St. John's Hospital Santa Monica Dear Mr. Murray, Was distressed to learn in today's movie trade paper that you are laid low with, of all things, gout.
