Presented is thelovely Mary Baker Eddy souvenir spoon, manufactured by Durgin. This isa highly sought after spoon, cherished by spoon collectors, religious historians, and Christian Scientists, alike.
This spoon measures 5 3/4" in length, and is quite heavy. Marked with the Durgin "D", Sterling, Patent on the back. The bowl contains an embossed image of Pleasant View, Mrs. Eddy's home in Concord, New Hampshire. The scene is a lovely one, with a fountain in the foreground and trees and bushes about. The top of the handle depicts a relief of Mrs. Eddy, with the 'cross and crown' motif above. Her signature is along the stem. The reverse of the spoon, at the top, states, "Not matter but mind satisfieth." The 'cross and crown' motif is also present on the rear. What is most unusual about this particular Mary Baker Eddy spoon is that the reverse of the spoon appears to have been 'double stamped.' That is to say, when it was manufactured, the design on the reverse of the spoon handle was stamped into it twice, and the 2 attempts didn't line us. The result is a slight shadow effect. The sterling patent mark and the text, Not matter but mind satisfieth, are most greatly effected. The edges of the cross and crown on the reverse are also effected. The front of the spoon is stamped very crisply...the reverse has the shadow effect. I've tried to illustrate it with some of the pictures. The spoon shows little signs of wear, and has a lovely patina. Don't miss out on this opportunity to add this lovely and meaningful spoon to your collection!
