Beautiful c.1916 landscape by American artist, MAry Clare Sherwood (1968-1943). Titled: ______ (illegible) Dam, c.1916. Oil on canvas measures 15.5 x 20 inches; 22.5 x 28 inches in solid wood antique frame. Original 1916 Rochester Art Club label affixed verso. Painting is in need of a cleaning. Craquelure over surface as is evident in photos. No loss or restoration. Signed in pencil on stretcher, verso. Mary Clare Sherwood was born in Lyons, New York and died in Vicksburg, Mississippi. She was a painter that mostly worked in the medium of oil or watercolor. She mainly painted landscapes of the region were she was living. Ms. Sherwood studied in New York at the Art Students League with Julian Alden Weir and William Merritt Chase and at Woodstock, New York with Kenyon Cox. Her studies took her to Europe to study with Conrad Fehr and Curt Hermann in Berlin and F. Edwin Scott in Paris.
