Mask - Luluwa / Lulua Peoples, DRC “Luluwa" is a general term for the people that reside between the Kasai and Sankuru rivers. The Masks of the Luluwa are very rare and little research has been made about their origins. It is believed that this type of mask appears in public feasts and is danced to repel evil spirits and harmful influences. The multiple holes are said to enable the masquerader with abilities to see into the spirit realms. Condition (see photos) · The mask has stable cracks as a result of extensive internal repairs (last two photos). · There are also a few small nicks and dents to the exterior surface. · Traces of insect damage internal surface (last two photos). · The nose ring / hoop is also missing.
