This is a shrine jewel or pin. I acquired it from a seller of an estate, near Philadelphia, PA. They stated to me that it has a circa of 1890 . I am not sure what was originally attached to the ring on the top. I have seen them with a pin and I have seen them attached to a chain as a neck jewel. Since this one has a pin on the back, I assume that it was part of a neck jewel. The pin on the back of a neck jewel allows it to be attached to the shirt so that it will not flop around. It is at least 10Kt possibly 14Kt gold, it is not marked. The claws are real animal claws. (I have been told by a reputable authority that it is against the law to remove the claws from an animal, even after they are dead.) I do know that the only ones which you can acquire are those which were extracted prior to the enactment of the law. This jewel measures 1 3/8 across and 1 1/2 from the top of the ring to the bottom of the claws. The sphinx head appears to be alabaster, or carved Onyx with a gold cap. The condition is excellent with no visible scratches or chips in the claws. Shipments to Canada ad $5.00 for shipping and insurance.
