The Massachusetts State volunteer Civil War military drum with hide head and snare, maple rims and shell, original tension ropes, the sides of shell hand-painted with a massive gold baroque frame flanked with two stands of three colorful American flags. The oval panel was completely hand-painted by an unidentified artist, probably from Boston. The artistic composition is divided into two polychromed spheres by the upper boughs of the famous `Liberty Tree`. The lower portion of the panel depicts a representation of the Massachusetts State Seal surmounted in front of the trunk of the tree, flanked by artistic vignettes of the Boston Commons and the top with artistically rendered image of the Massachusetts capitol building against an azure sky. The side of the drum is mounted with an oval silver presentation escutcheon inscribed: `Keep Step to the Music of the Union/Presented By/George L. Miller/by the Officers and Members of Co. F, 14th/Massachusetts Volunteers/Heavy Artillery/Fort. Scott, Va./July 14, 1862 . Size: 12 1/2-inches high X 16 1/2-inches high. Caba. 2) Large group of photostatic copies from various reference works with histories of the regiment to which the original owner of the drum, George Miller was attached, and to which he served, as well as a copious file from the National archives on Miller`s service during the Civil War. 20000 - 25000
