Huge and most impressive! Ancient Daunian pottery askos from the Native Italic community that existed side-by-side both the Etruscans and Greeks in the period between the 8th to the 4th century BC. Dates to the 5th century BC, during the time the Athenians were producing their red-figure wares, single spout and strap handle (arching over what can only be a representation of a female breast) with extensive decorations to neck of spout, body and base in black and red over near-white base in mostly floral designs with series of delightful running deer around the midsection. 14-1/2"D x 11-1/2"H, broken and repaired from 15 to 20 pieces, but virtually all there with over-painting only over breaks -- not repainted! Ex-south France Collection.
