Large Exquisite Victorian Foul ANCHOR Brooch in Sterling Silver c.1880-90 To the Victorians, the Anchor was a symbol of Hope, an emotion that provided a refuge from the trevails of living in a time when death was always near. Faith (Cross), Hope (Anchor) and Charity (Heart) was an extremely popular Victorian motif found in all types of jewelry. This massive Antique Sterling Silver (tested/unmarked) Foul Anchor Brooch (c. 1880-90) is an outstanding example. The brooch is delicately and expertly engraved. Has a twisted silver rope (fouled) coiling itself around the anchor. Retains its original tube-hinge, c-clasp and extended pin stem; in fine working order. This piece is in excellent condition! T is a large top-loop on the piece so that it could also be worn as a pendant. The anchor is a Christian symbol for hope and steadfastness. This symbolic meaning rests on the Epistle to the Hebrews 6:19, which refers to the everlasting virtue of God's counsel in these words, "Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast..." The anchor is the attribute of St. Clement, who was condemned to be cast into the sea bound to an anchor. Early Christians used the anchor as a disguised cross, and as a marker to guide the way to secret meeting places. A Christian symbol of hope, it is found as funerary symbolism in the art of the catacombs. Often set amongst rocks. It can also be an occupational symbol in sea-faring areas or the attribute of Saint Nicholas, patron saint of seamen, symbolized hope and steadfastness. An anchor with a broken chain stands for the cessation of life. Measures 2.50" (L) x 1.75" (at its widest point) Weighs 7.9 Grams
