Barbour Silver Company Silverplate Circa 1890 Lavish and Decadent Art Nouveau Design Quadruple Plate 5 Arm Candelabra Excellent Condition with Rare Original Damper This massive piece is hallmarked by the Barbour Silver Company on the bottom. The hallmark reads "BARBOUR SILVER CO - QUADRUPLE PLATE". The number "2208" is marked below that. This candelabra's design is a riot of iris flowers and dripping foliage that undulate along almost every surface in classic art nouveau style. The detail is deep and crisp.The piece is massive in size and measures about 14" tall and over 15" wide. With the damper in place in the topmost candle well, it is almost 18" tall.The piece is in excellent antique condition. T are just a few very minor areas of plate damage, assorted light surface scratches and some slight bends to some of the candle well rims. Only one of the rim bends is noticeable - it's pushed down about 1/8" inch. The only major issue this piece has is that it has darkened quite a bit. I'm always wary when I see darkened silverplate and you should be too because sometimes that indicates permanent damage. This kind of tarnish can hide extensive plate loss or simply be pervasive all the way to the underlying base metal. It can also indicate that someone tried to remove the tarnish with a liquid dip that reacted badly with the base metal. In all of these cases, the dark patina cannot be removed. Happily, this beautiful piece is not past that point of no return. I polished out several little test areas just to make sure and the plate below is wonderful - rich and deep (see 3rd photo for some of those patches). A thorough polishing will have it looking absolutely magnificent, regal and ready to take center stage on your holiday table. These items are all part of a truly amazing lifetime collection of antique sterling and silverplate that I will be offering over the next 2 months. I estimate t are well over 150 items spanning the entire range of silver design - from whimsical and naturalistic to crisp Irish design. They belong to a wonderful couple who started collecting back in the early 80's and were early and enthusiastic sponsors of the Dallas Museum of Art's exceptional silver collection. They are preparing to move into a retirement community, and it's now time to share their treasures with some lucky new collectors.
