DESCRIPTION : This is a EXTRAORDINARY silver necklace that was handwrought in Taxco, Mexico, before 1948. It is made of 940 silver which is superior to sterling silver which is 925. This necklace is masterfully crafted in an elegant and timeless design. It has a huge (5-1/2" wide and 3" long) pectoral silver repousse centerpiece. The repousse work is SPECTACULAR depicting mirror images of Quetzalcoatl, the featd serpent deity of ancient Mesoamerica. The recesses of the designs are heavily oxidized which lends depth and dimension to this piece ~ the silver has a gorgeous rich patina. T are rectangular silver links connected with large soldered silver jump rings on either side of the centerpiece. The clasp is a simple hook closure that is seen on much of the early Mexican silver jewelry. This is an art-to-wear masterpiece ~ early , signed and fully hallmarked ~ a grand asset to any vintage Taxco silver collection ~ museum, collector, heirloom quality ~ SIMPLY, THE BEST!!! Artisan MS and this hallmark are shown on page 221 of Bille Hougart's highly respected source book, The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks (2006 edition). Mr. Hougart indicates that this artist used the Eagle 3 assay mark ~ this piece does not have an Eagle assay mark, helping to date it to before 1948, when the Mexican government mandated the Eagle marking system for silver.
