Being offered is an ultra rare 1921 Standard Oil Company of New York china pitcher that bears the distinct logo of the Standard Oil Company shipping flag. This solid blue flag with the single letter "S" adorns the side of this massive pitcher. It measures 9 ¾" high by 10" wide (from the tip of the spout to the opposite side of the handle) by 6" deep (at the widest point). This is a truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to add a piece of this magnitude to any restaurantware, shipping memorabilia or petroliana collection. The pitcher was made by Buffalo China Company of Buffalo , New York and was distributed by Kniffen & Demarest. Buffalo, originally a subsidiary of Larkin Soap Manufacturing, began producing stock and custom decorated vitrified china for hotels, railroads, and other establishments as early as 1915 ( source: Barbara Conroy's Restaurant China, Volume 2) . The pitcher is white with two blue stripes that partially encircle the middle. The stripes end in a petite curl on either side of the Standard Oil Shipping flag logo. A single blue strip runs down the center of the wide handle. This handle is nearly 1" wide. The pitcher itself is considered a "trade side 6," and holds eight (8) pints of fluid. It is likely to be used by the ship's staff as a water service pitcher or as a water pitcher inside a stateroom. Standard Oil began as an Ohio partnership formed by the well-known industrialist John D. Rockefeller , his brother William Rockefeller , Henry Flagler , chemist Samuel Andrews , and a silent partner Stephen V. Harkness . In 1870 Rockefeller incorporated Standard Oil in Ohio . Using highly effective tactics, later widely criticized, it absorbed or destroyed most of its competition in Cleveland in less than two months in 1872 and later throughout the northeastern United States , putting numerous corporations out of business. In 1890, Standard Oil of Ohio moved its headquarters from Cleveland to its permanent headquarters at 26 Broadway in New York City . Concurrently, the trustees of Standard Oil of Ohio chartered the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey (SOCNJ) to take advantages of New Jersey 's more lenient corporate stock ownership laws. By 1911, with public outcry at a climax, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that Standard Oil must be dissolved and split into 34 companies. Two of these companies were Jersey Standard ("Standard Oil Company of New Jersey "), which eventually became Exxon, and Socony ("Standard Oil Company of New York "), which eventually became Mobil. ( Source: ) The Standard Oil Company of New York was a unit of the Standard Oil Trust and one of the major components into which the Trust was broken in 1911. The first house flag was plain blue with a white "S" (Lloyds 1912 shows the "S" with serifs, later sources without; Talbot-Booth 1937 labels this flag "Standard Shipping Co. " ( Source: ) This magnificent pitcher has no cracks, chips or repairs. It is in amazingly perfect condition with no utensil marks, crazing or other signs of wear. As is typical of china of this era, t are a few black specks under the glaze - from the time of firing - and do not distract from the beauty and rarity of this pitcher. Please be aware that this pitcher weighs over five pounds by itself and will require substantial packing to protect it during shipment.
