Up for sale is this silhouette cut "with scissors" by Master Hanks at the "Gallery of Cuttings." Okay, I've done a little research and this is what I've come up with. In the book the History of Silhouettes by E. Nevill Jackson (published in 1911 by The Connoisseur, London), Jackson list a "Hanks, Master" on page 120, stating that a silhouettes of his was listed in the Catalog of the Exhibition of the Maryland Society of Colonial Dames. The silhouette was of a Henrietta Moffet and it was in the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Whitbridge. That would have been enough, except that there was also a "Hubard, Master" listed who was working out of the "Gallery of Cuttings and Philharmonic Concert Room" in New York City. I think the "Hanks" is pretty clear on the back so as not to be mistaken with "Hubard", yet it is odd. It seems as if they were both working around the middle of the 19th century. Maybe "Master" was more a title, like "Master Silhouettist" or something? As you can see the card is not cut squarely. It measures around 2 1/2" across and 3 3/4" tall. There is something going on at the top of the head - a ridge or small tear or something. The bottom left-hand corner of the card is bent.
