Impoirtant old master drawing by English nobleman Bache Thornhill. Signed on back with date 1812. Paper measures 6 3/4" x 10 3/4". Black chalk on blue paper with white highlights. Nocturnal image of Sutton Park Warwickshire. Location is close to the family castle of the Thornhill of Stanton in Derbyshire. Gallery label mentions Bache as an amateur artist, but this is not for any fault of talent. Bache was an aristocrat who did not need to sell art for a living, and was not a career artist. However, this artwork is very talented and compares to leading artists of the day, most notably Pierre Paul Prud'hon, who favored this distinctive use of blue paper . This drawing has a chiaroscuro effect of light and shows a neoclassic style demonstrating Bache was educated in the most forward trends in art of his time. The label on back is from Helene C. Seinferheld Gallery Inc 158 East 64 Street NY City. This is great provenance. The National Gallery alone has a total of 48 collector donated old master drawings that were purchased from Helene C. Seinferheld Gallery which include a small Michelagelo work. Many other US museums hold artworks that prior sold through this gallery to great american art collectors. Condition is excellant.
