Beautiful black on black Mata Ortiz pot signed, Tavo Silveira. This is a beautiful hand coiled pot with a beautiful design. It measures 7.25" tall and 7" wide. I bought this and a few other pots when visiting Mexico. Tavo Silveira is an extremely talented artist and is doing some fabulous work. This I believe is some of his earlier work as he uses more color in his current pieces. This is a must have for Mata Ortiz pottery collectors. I am not a retailer. I have collected Native American jewelry and pottery for my personal enjoyment but am now thinning out the collection to get ready for retirement. About Tavo Silviera and Mata Ortiz Pottery - Octavio "Tavo" Silveira has won the many awards at the annual Concorso y Exposicion Artesanal in Mata Ortiz over the years and is now considered to be in the top five Mata Ortiz potters. Tavo is featured in Susan Lowell's book "The Many Faces of Mata Ortiz" on p. 178. Mata Ortiz pottery is built by the traditional method of coiling clay, and forming the shape by laying coil on coil and then smoothing the out side by burnishing it with a river polished stone or piece of wood. The decoration is painted on, it is made from red occur and black occur, (red iron oxide and black iron oxide, and sometimes manganese dioxide) and then the pots are fired in a traditional pit firing. The pots are earthenware and could only be low fired. At the temperatures of high fire stoneware the earthenware clay would melt into a glaze. The quality of the decorative detail on the pots depends on the skill of the artist and the time spent decorating .
