Matl Poulat Signed Sterling Silver, Amethyst, Coral & Turquoise Ring Circa 1950 -1960 You are looking at a Matilde Eugenia Poulat ring that is from sometime in the 1950's - 1960, in perfect condition. An example of her script signature "hallmark" from this time period can be found on page 158 in The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks by Bille Hougart. On the inside of the ring, one can read in script the following: Matl, 925, Mexico and M 15 - 12. This beautiful vintage ring is a classic with a pyramid cut amethyst in the center, flanked by 4 pieces of coral, and further surrounded by 12 cabochons of turquoise. The ring is a size 7 1/4, with Matl's famous applied silver wire work along the sides and decorating the band. The ring is one inch X one inch, and weighs 11.3 grams. Matl's jewelry was the favorite of the famous Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo, who had Matilde design many of her favorite pieces of jewelry. Matilde Poulat studied at the San Carlos Academy of Art in Mexico City along with famous fellow student, Diego Rivera. (Who, by the way was married to Frida Kahlo) A painter and designer first, Matl opened her shop in 1934, w her interest turned exclusively to silver.
