MATL, Mexican Turquoise and Amethyst Silver Pendant Cross. Magnificent, ca. 1970’s, Fully Marked. Matilde Eugenia Poulat introduced “Matl” in 1934, and since her death in 1960, her designs and techniques have been carried on by her nephew, Ricardo Salas. Her designs for jewelry and religious figures were part of the new cultural vision among Mexico ’s intellectuals after the revolution. In the 1920’s, artists were searching for a Mexican aesthetic, rejecting European subjects in favor of the art of the Pre-Conquest Indians and of the Mexican Pueblos. She found inspiration in the Mixtec gold jewelry discovered in 1932 at Monte Albán. The mark, “Matl”, was originally a registered trademark, number 142093. In the 1950’s the company acquired the eagle stamp with the number 129. What is now used to identify the work of Matl Salas is the number MS-12, the mark “Matl” and the signature of Ricardo Salas engraved on the back of the piece.
