is a lovely 1/6th plate daguerreotype of a demure lady seated holdingan illustrated newspaper, called THE GUARDIAN. The image on the newspaper'scover is clearly discernible with magnification - its a woodcut or engraving of palm trees and a landscape. To the side of the sitter are a jumble of leather bound books, her spectacles and an artful drape that serves to lend aesthetic elegance and sophistication to the portrait. The plate has an early SCOVILLS mark, tightly clipped corners - it has been re-sealed with Filmoplast P90 ARCHIVAL TAPE. The case has M Brady - Case Maker NY in two distinctive lozenges at the top and bottom - see pictures. The posing table has a lyre style tablecloth that leads me to ponder if the image was actually taken by BRADY himself? Is this his studio furniture - come on you experts out t put forward your wisdom and intellect! Anyway, regardless of whether he took the daguerreotype or not, it is very interesting that the sitter is casually posed holding a paper in something of an eclectic and intimate pose. The style of her garments and this type of case would indicate a date of around 1843.
