A very scarce Matthew Brady item, #2 of "The Gallery of Illustrious Americans." Published in 1850, this is #2 of what was to be a 24 part series of reproductions of Brady Daguerreotypes of notable Americans, however only 12 issues were actually published. Engraving by d'Avignon of John Caldwell Calhoun after daguerreotype by Brady, very nice embossed credit below portrait. Large folio wrappers ( 21 by 15 inches ), with 2 pages of biographical text, along with text on front and rear flyleaf and back cover page. Condition is somewhat rough with tears and chipping to covers and second page of biographical text, staining on left hand side of portrait plate, not effecting image itself, however given rarity of this, certainly a candidate for paper repair/restoration. A wonderful piece of early Matthew Brady material. Questions/inquiries welcome. (One full set of all 12, in bound format is currently available from a notable bookdealer for $22,500.) Add 10.00 US for postage, will send in a large poster tube. I do have one more of these, #4, of Silas Wright, which is in a bit better overall condition although the portrait has been cut down in size from the original 15 by 21 inch size, inquiries on that one welcome as well. See http://www./exh/brady/gallery/48gal.html for more information on this rare publication, also see http://www./exh/brady/gallery/gal_I_A.html for an original ad for this series.
