This auction is for a beautiful Matthew Norman Chronometer in it's fitted wooden case . It is a Swiss mechanism Quartz clock, incorporated into a TRADITIONAL DESIGN . Probably ten to fifteen years old- It is a SCARCE piece, with an Internet search finding only very expensive recent Matthew Norman clocks, with no mention of this design. It had been carried in the salon of a vintage boat, w it was the CENTERPIECE of the cabin. Precisely fitted into a weighty brass mounted case, with the top section divided into the cover and a glass topped sub cover, allowing viewing the clock while keeping it protected from moisture and the elements. Wood appears to be mahogany or rosewood, beautifully grained. All brass is nicely polished with an elegant golden 'instrument' finish. Clock is fully gimballed in all directions, and can be secured into position with the customary knurled thumbscrew latch. No key for the lock, but it appears as if one could be easily fitted, if desired. Push button frees the top cover, showing the chronometer under glass. Brass slide holds the top open when lifted. The instrument shows some very light marks, with one of the brass corner protectors having a chip- Overall this is a HANDSOME piece which will enhance any vintage vessel or Nautical Den. Marked " Matthew Norman...Quartz...Swiss Made " on the face. The instrument keeps excellent time. Uses the standard inexpensive N2 1 1/2 Volt battery. Measures 7" X 7" inches, which was the size of most of the old marine chronometers. It is quite a weighty and substantial unit. Swiss precision coupled with modern technology and traditional design - Simply GORGEOUS , yet offered with a very....................Low Reserve.
