A United States Navy Cruiser with a long and fascinating military history The following information is taken from Wikipedia: USS Baltimore (C-3) USS Baltimore anchored in Honolulu, HI Career (US) Laid down: 5 May 1887 Launched: 6 October 1888 Commissioned: 7 January 1890 Decommissioned: 15 September 1922 Fate: Sold 16 February 1942 General characteristics Displacement: 4,413 long tons (4,484 t) Length: 336 ft (102 m) Beam: 48 ft 6 in (14.8 m) Draft: 20 ft 6 in (6.2 m) Installed power: 10,000 ihp (7,500 kW) Propulsion: 2 � horizontal triple expansion reciprocating engines, 2 � screws Complement: 383 officers and men Armament: 4 � 8 in (200 mm)/35 cal Mark 4 guns (4x1) 6 � 6 in (150 mm)/30 cal Mark 3 guns (6x1) Armor: Deck : 4 in (100 mm)The fourth USS Baltimore (C-3) (later CM-1 ) was a United States Navy cruiser , the second protected cruiser to be built by an American yard. Like the previous one, Charleston , the design was commissioned from the British company of W. Armstrong, Mitchell, and Company of Newcastle . She was launched on 6 October 1888 by William Cramp and Sons Ship and Engine Building Company, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania , sponsored by Mrs. Theodore D. Wilson, wife of Chief Constructor Theodore D. Wilson ; and commissioned on 7 January 1890, with Captain W. S. Schley in command.She was commissioned the Flagship of the North Atlantic Squadron on May 24th, 1890. She moved to the South Pacific Station and protected American citizens during the Chilean revolution. 1892 was sent to the Mare Island Navy Yard w she cruised the West Coast. Returned as flagship for the Asiatic Station w she protected American interests from 1893-1895.She was out of commission until 1897 when she then went to the Hawaiian Islands. and later joined with Commodore George Dewey's squadron at Hong Kong. They sailed for the Phillipines w they entered Manilla Bay and destroyed the Spanish fleet stationed t In 1913-1914 she was converted to a minelayer at the Charleston Navy Yard and carried out mining experiments at Chesapeake Bay and along the Atlantic Coast.During WWI she assisted in laying a deep mine field off the Northern coast of Ireland. For four years she participated in the Northern Mine Barrage between the Orkneys and Iceland.In 1919 she joined the Pacific Fleet, receiving new designation of CM-1 and remained on the West Coast until Jan. 1921. She then proceeded to Pearl Harbor w she was placed out of commission September 15, 1922. She then served as a receiving ship at Pearl Harbor, and was present during the Attack on Pearl Harbor December 07, 1941. She was sold on February 16, 1942, and scrapped. T are no chips or cracks, no odor, it is clean inside (contains a roll of ONT black thread) and has its original green cotton cord handle completely intact. It measures 3 1/2 inches tall.
