Maureen McGovern's recording career began in 1972 with her #1 chart-topping, Oscar-winning Gold Record "The Morning After," which earned her a Grammy nomination for "Best New Artist." She replicated this success two years later with another Oscar-winning Gold Record, "We May Never Love Like This Again," then made history in 1975 as the first singer to introduce two Oscar-nominated songs in the same year. To date, her career has spanned thirty-five years, including recordings, concerts, Broadway, films, television, radio and composing. With a voice that defies categorization - from a jazzy, warm pop register to a crystalline coloratura - she has earned a reputation for being one of America's most popular artists. Now her newest album, A LONG AND WINDING ROAD, finds Maureen reconnecting with the "Baby Boomer" songs that inspired her beginnings as a folk singer in the late '60s. The album features an eclectic mix of classic and evocative tunes from such groundbreaking singer-songwriters as Joni Mitchell, Jimmy Webb, Paul Simon, Carole King, James Taylor, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Laura Nyro, whose songs comprise, as The New York Times has noted, "the second half of the Great American Songbook." It's an introspective collection that's at once rousing, powerful, and always deeply moving, featuring timeless songs that will speak to music-lovers of all ages.

"NAUGHTY BABY" :
1 [Applause] 2 Stiff Upper Lip 3 Things Are Looking Up 4 (I've Got) Beginner's Luck 5 How Long Has This Been Going On? 6 By Strauss 7 Naughty Baby 8 Love Walked In 9 Embraceable You 10 A Corner of Heaven With You 11 Somebody Loves Me 12 Little Jazz Bird 13 My Man's Gone Now 14 Porgy, I Is Your Woman (Bess, You Is My Woman) 15 The Man I Love 16 Piano Prelude II 17 Summertime 18 Strike up the Band 19 Fascinating Rhythm 20 Clap Yo' Hands 21 They Can't Take That Away from Me 22 'S Wonderful 23 They All Laughed 24 I Got Rhythm 25 Love Is Here to Stay/Of Thee I Sing

McGovern as sophisticated pop singer, effectively handling an album of Gershwin material. Includes "Of Thee I Sing," the theme from a show in which she starred in 1987. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi

"GREATEST HITS" :

1 The Morning After [Song from The Poseidon Adventure] 2 Different Worlds [Theme from the TV Series Angie] 3 Very Special Love 4 I'm Happy Just to Dance With You 5 Carolina Moon 6 Yes, I'm Ready 7 He's a Rebel 8 Can't Take My Eyes off You 9 In Too Deep 10 Can You Read My Mind? [Love Theme from Superman]

Not a bad compilation if I do say so myself. In addition to her trademark recordings of "The Morning After" and "Can You Read My Mind" , this album offers a fairly decent take of "Can't Take My Eyes Off You", as well. Acting as the CD's optimum gem, McGovern's discofied rendition of "I'm Happy Just Dance With You" provides for a pleasant, upbeat deviation from her ordinarily mellow repertoire
