Signed along the lower right corner HM Pechstein, we matched the signature to the listed German/French artist Max Herman Pechstein (1881 - 1955), though with no further provenance from the multi-estate sale, we are calling this an "after" piece, even though in our eyes, everything matches! Through our research we found two other similar pieces of artwork that have current estimates of up into hundreds of thousands of dollars! Just check Askart and you will be a believer! So even though we feel this could be an authentic Max Herman Pechstein, we unfortunately do not have the provenance to back it up! A great piece from the Continental school depicting a naive bucolic countryside, a few trees filling the right side of the canvas with rows of farmland between them and the valley below. We love Continental art, but we love it even more when the artist...keep scrolling there are 20 pictures and more description beneath the photos below!include a small chicken coop on the farm! Just look at the tiny multi-colored birds feeding off the ground! So sweet! Placed in a decorative frame, the artwork measures approx. 24-7/8" by 27" with a sight size of 19-3/4" by 17-5/8". We found overall craquelure with scattered areas of paint flecks, though hardly noticeable, and a small elephant track that we spotted along the backside of the canvas. The painting was taped in the frame by it's previous owner, nothing that a few nails won't cure! Max Herman Pechstein (1881 - 1955) as found on Askart Max Herman Pechstein was active/lived in Germany, France. Max Pechstein is known for expressionist still life, genre, figure and landscape painting, printmaking. Hermann Max Pechstein was born in Eckerback, Germany, and studied at the School of Applied Arts and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden. In 1905, he was awarded the Saxon State Prize for painting. The following year, he met Erich Heckel and joined the Die Brücke group in Dresden. Pechstein traveled in 1908 to Paris, where he met the Fauve artists and exhibited with the Société Anonyme. In 1909, Pechstein joined the Berlin Sezession and exhibited with them the same year. However, after they rejected his works (and those of other avant-garde artists) in 1910, he resigned. He then helped found the Neue Sezession with George Tappert and became its first president. Pechstein exhibited with the Neue Sezession, the Blaue Reiter and published in Der Sturm between 1910 and 1912. Pechstein traveled to the German occupied Palau Islands in the South Pacific in 1914, but was forced to leave when the Japanese invaded. On his return journey he was imprisoned by the Japanese at Nagasaki. After his release in 1915, Pechstein traveled through Asia and to the USA. Upon his return to Germany that same year, he was drafted and sent to the Western Front. He resumed his life in Berlin following his discharge in 1917.
