Although, the name gladius brings to mind the image of the gladiator, this is only partially correct. The gladiator used a variation of the gladius that was shorter than the sword used by the Roman soldier. This shorter sword was easier to use in close quarters, but it was also much more dangerous to use. Typically the gladius was used with the scutum (square Roman shield). The sword was used primarily for stabbing strikes, but the sword was also capable of slashing motions. The sword was so devastating that during the war with Macedonia the soldiers of Macedonia were terrified of the sword after seeing the wounds it inflicted. Attributes of the Weapon: Blade: The blade of the sword is 440 stainless with an unsharpened edge. The blade has been constructed with the traditional cross section rhombus design. The blade has a mirror polished finish. Scabbard: The scabbard is wooden with a brown imitation leather cover and begins with a steel scabbard throat. read more
