DESCRIPTION: this is a genuine, hand-signed signature on a 5x7 photo. It was autographed by a combat veteran of the elite 2nd Marine Raider Battalion, of World War II-fame. This photo was taken in August 2006, at the hotel where Marine Raider veterans were staying, who were participating in the christening ceremony of the USS Makin Island , in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The gentleman at left is unidentified but at center is Lieutenant Colonel Brian J. Quirk, who was on the Makin Raid and later served with the 3rd Raider Battalion on Bougainville and earned the Navy Cross there. At right is Kenneth L. "Mac" McCulloutgh, who was the only radioman to survive the Makin Raid. Mr. McCullough signed this in black ink: "Mac McCullough." HISTORY: McCullough served in the Marine Corps during World War II and volunteered for the Raiders. He was in the 2nd Raider Battalion, which was nicknamed "Carlson's Raiders" after its commanding officer, Major and later Lieutenant Colonel Evans F. Carlson. McCullough took part in the Makin Raid of August 1942. He was Carlson's radioman and was in fact, the only radioman of the entire mission who did not become a casualty. At one point during the action, because of communications problems, he had to climb up a tree to signal to the submarines offshore! ETHICS: I'm a former Marine/retired policeman/Afghanistan
