VINTAGE McIntosh MAC 1700 FM Receiver Serial number 1Z326 This is a McIntosh MAC1700 receiver -- made sometime between 1967 and 1973, back in the Golden Age of American Hi-fi. This beautiful receiver is big and heavy, and makes a very attractive sound. All front panel lights are working. It tunes in and plays stations, even without an antenna. Music plays from its Aux input. I plugged an RCA cable into the Phono inputs (it has two), to do a touch test. There was an audible buzz when I touched the hot (center) conductor of the RCA plug, so I know the Phono stages are amplifying. The MAC 1700 employs a vacuum tube FM Stereo tuner section with solid-state preamplifier and power amplifier circuits. It has the characteristic McIntosh "house sound" -- warm and solid, very easy on the ears. This unit is quite old (maybe 40 years) and is dusty. The Bass, Treble, Loudness and Volume controls all work, but are noisy. They should be cleaned with contact cleaner (Caig DeOxit recommended). I'm sure the tuner section could use a good alignment, but it does pull in the more powerful local stations without an antenna, so it's probably working well enough for most listeners.
