Thomas L. McKenney [& James Hall]. History of the Indian Tribes of North America, with biographical sketches and anecdotes of the principal chiefs. Philadelphia: published by D. Rice & Co., [no date but circa 1870?] 2 volumes (text only, without the two folio volumes of plates), quarto signed in 4s (10 3/4 x 7 5/8 inches). [1-]450; [3-]541. Limitation statements on the verso of each title. 1 hand-coloured lithographic plate bound as the frontispiece to vol.2, signed in the image 'Max Rosenthal'. Contemporary deep purple half morocco over purple pebble-grained cloth-covered boards, spines divided into five compartments by semi-raised bands, lettered in gilt in the second and fourth compartments, marbled endpapers (leather scuffed and re-touched). Provenance : Edward Laurence Doheny (bookplate); Estelle Doheny (bookplate, sale Christies 1 Feb 1988 lot 242, with the plate volumes). The rarest of all issues of McKenney and Hall, limited to 35 sets, this numbered 18. The Billy Bowlegs plate is not found in the early editions of this work, and was never issued in folio format: this example with the lithographer's name seems to be unrecorded? This fine copy of the text was originally issued with two folio volumes containing 80 portraits, and is from the famous Doheny collection that Christies sold in a series of record-breaking sales over 20 years ago. The folio volumes with the 80 portraits are no longer present, but these two text volumes on offer here remain as a fitting testament to both the Doheny library, and the work of McKenney and Hall in preserving many of the stories of the rich heritage of the Native Americans of the 19th century and earlier. (See the online University of Cincinnati Digital Collections, go to the McKenny & Hall section, search under 'Bowlegs', for an image of the usual form of the 'Billy Bowlegs' image).Check out my other items !.
