Weight: 0.15 gr. Fragment with fusion crust ! The rock fragment offered in the auction is a Shergottite, a Meteorite from the Planet Mars. Shergottites are Marsian basalts, with a similar Mineralogy compared to terrestrial basalts. T are two clues which clearly indicate Planet Mars as Origin for the Shergotties: 1. Pockets in the Shergottites, which were formed by impakt, play an important role in the question of the origin of the Marsmeteorites. The gases included in these pockets correspond to the composition of the gases which were examined 1976 by the Viking spacecrafts in the Marsian atmosp 2. A further indication for the origin of Mars is the relatively recent age (only few hundred million years) of the Shergottites. In this period -except on our earth, Venus and Io- one can find volcanic activities in our solar system only on Mars. In Nr. 36 of "Lunar and Planetary Science" (2005) American scientists (Irving et al.) examined the relationship of the Shergottites with the Tharsis Region on Mars. The Tharsis region is the largest volcanic area in our solar system. This area is dominated by Mons Olympus. With a height of 25 km and a diameter of 624 km (!) Mons Olympus is the largest volcano in our solar system. Due to petrological and petrochemical relations it is considered as safe that the Shergottites derives from the Tharsis Region on Planet Mars. _____________________________________________________________ International bidders are very welcome!
