The speciem shows very fine silver shiny shock veins and an Olivine Clast. Size: 3 cm x 2 cm x 1 cm. Weight: 14.6 Grams. Location: Found 2004 in Algeria. Some basics about Mesosiderites: The name "mesosiderite" comes from the Greek "mesos" (medium) and "sideros" (iron) and so reflects the fact that Mesosiderites are mixtures of brecciated silicates and iron-nickel. Evidently the silicates came from the crust of an achondritic parent body. The iron-nickel in mesosiderites, on the other hand, looks like the metal in group IIIAB iron meteorites and shows every sign of having derived from the core of a completely different asteroid than that of the silicates. An explanation for the origin of mesosiderites is that an extraterrestrial collision took place between two differentiated asteroids in which the still-liquid core of one asteroid mixed with the solidified crust of the other. So the Mesosiderites can tell us a thrilling story about the "massive traffic" in the asteroid belt which often causes "collision accidents". One of these powerful collisions between two asteroids in the inner main asteroid belt 160 million years ago was the likely source of the K-T impact 65 million years ago which ended the Age of the Dinosaurs.
