See the scans of the front and back. I just bought a fine, old collection of Boy Scouts of America medals and insignia. It included a number of the early contest medals. This is the only one of these contest medals that I have seen dated on the front - it is carefully hand engraved with a "19" and a "18" at the start and end of the "FIRE MAKING" title on the obverse. This is the bronze Fire Making award medal with the original old RW&B ribbon and original safety pin style brooch. This series had nineteen different designs in three metals (gold colored, silver and bronze). The designs included archery, bridge building, bugling, camping, canoeing, cooking, field craft, firemaking, first aid, handicraft, knife and axe, knot tying, signaling with one scout, signaling with two scouts, swimming, tent pitching, tower building, track and wall scaling. They are all quite collectable. To cut the cost, the BSA went to a boring, generic design for Boy Scout contests and another plain design for Explorer contests in the 1950's, abandoning this great series of individual designs. The earlier medals had a red, white and blue ribbon, while the 1930's - 1940's awards had a solid blue ribbon. This is hallmarked with the official BSA logo on the bottom reverse. The bronze medal was usually awarded for third place.

Generally XF condition. The initials "JC" are lightly scratched on the back. Original ribbon and brooch. A neat display piece. Great design of a scout making fire by friction. NO RESERVE !!! I will be listing other Boy Scout medals this week.

NOTE: I am very good about getting my orders out promptly, sometimes same day and almost always within 24 hours. However, lately the U.S. postal "service" has been very spotty. In the last several months, I have had first class insured items take over a month to California and two weeks in New York State. Most are delivered in a timely fashion, but a few are not. NEW RULES FOR 2007 - NO OVERSEAS SALES, CANADA AND U.S. ONLY. Sorry about that, but my airmail small packets are being stolen enroute to England and Belgium. ALSO: ALL ITEMS MUST HAVE AT LEAST MINIMUM ($50) INSURANCE. NO EXCEPTIONS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES! Buyer pays $4.00 for insured postage. I will combine postage on multiple orders. PAY PAL, check or money order, please. Thanks. George B. Harris, P.O. Box 1136, Alfred, NY 14802.
