For auction is a vintage Medicine Hat Potteries covered grease jar or storage pot. This sturdy lidded jar is finished in two tones that include a warm dark brown glaze on the lid and upper portion of the pot and a natural glaze for the lower body of the pot. The natural taupe grey colour of the base is characteristic of the colour seen on stoneware. Markings : The base of the pot has a black ink stamp under the finishing glaze with the Indian logo and words that read: Medicine Hat Potteries. The base also has the number 1/2 hand incised into the pottery. The lid of the jar has the number 1 impressed into the top of the button handle. The jar and the lid were found together so we assume that they belong together. Approximate Dimensions : The jar has a diameter of 3 7/8" at the top rim and a diameter of about 4 ¼" at the bottom. The height to the top of the rim is 4 ¼" and about 4 ¾" to the top of the handle when the lid is in place. The diameter of the lid is about 3 1/8" at its widest area. The diameter of the lid when measuring across the unglazed rim is about 2 ½". Overall Condition : T are no hairlines, cracks, breaks or repairs to the pot or the lid. T are some pops and crazing in the glaze, as well as, surface wear to the glaze finish. The underside edge of the lid has areas w the glaze finish has flaked off. The neck of read more
