A rare find from the Middle Ages, this superb enamelled pendant is in fine condition with almost all the enamel decoration intact. The size is @ 1 1/4 inches square and the original hanging loop which is an integral part of the casting is intact and strong. If you were careful you could still wear this today. From the style i would say that this is likely to be of French manufacture, from the town of Limoges which was the centre of the European enamelling trade during the middle ages. I am estimating that the date of manufature would be C14/15th - it isnt very early in style but has an eastern influence which indicates slightly later. the front face shows the 3 wise men with destinctly eastern facial features, the inner circle is in green enamel and the outer in sky blue enamel. On the reverse is a cross with a variety of other symbols , this is enamelled in green. The front face and enamel on the front face is slightly better preserved, the enamel on the back is a little more degraded on the surface. This could have been caused by chemicals in the soil , it is not damaged or chipped the enamel has simply been affected unevenly by the soil for some reason. It has been professionally cleaned and is a super pendant. It is most unusual to find any pendant or heraldic crest of this age in such complete condition, enamel is very fragile read more
