Culture: Medieval - English - Cambrigeshire. Date: Circa: 12th Century AD - Third Crusade - King Richard Size: UK Z1/2 - US 13 - NB Band Inner Diam @ 21.5mm - Weight @ 15.7 grams - Extremely Heavy - Solid Silver. Description: A Very Rare Crusader / Templar Seal Ring detailing a thick raised bezel above decorated shoulders to a developing early stirrup band in thick and solid silver. The shoulders of this stunning example are towered to a buttress design with a central conical shaft which meets the band below. The lower shoulders detail stepped roundels. The ring has a typical early Medieval Nodult to the base of the band which details a cross design . This ring is over 15 grams of solid silver a truly huge and heavy example which confirms its expensive and hand made manufacture. Silver was a prefered metal of the Order and most Crusdaer examples are of silver with a few lesser rings in bronze.. (C.C.Oman Catalogue of Rings Victoria and Albert Museum 1930). There was a high degree of symbolism incorporated in Crusader ring decoration and design over three centuries. In this example it is thought that the Sun symbol (As Egyptian principle God Ra ) was to represent the God of Light . Our example details an elaborated central Sun decoration with weapt rays seen within a central circle. Further decoration and incised line detailing is seen to the outer bezel circum. Thus our attribution is suggested for the ring which is of typical early Medieval design (the outer circle around the inner sun may represent the roof Dome of the Temple at Jerusalem on the mount). Please also see the two pictures showing known Templar engravings on UK (Essex) Church door jamb to confirm the use of the "Sun Burst" symbol associated with the Order (amougst others). Also see images seen of the Order below the Streets of Royston, North Herts where a cave associated with the order was discovered in the 1700's - See sun symbol again as detailed to the bezel of the ring. Our ring is as old and contemporary with these structural engravings - thus Extremely Rare.. Fine striations to the subject which attest to the great age of the Ring.. The weight of this ring is the key in attribution, as little expense was spared in the manufacture of this truley huge ring which may have been worn over a glove, the band diam suggests this (Bishops rings of this and later eras where of similar dimensions to allow them to be worn over a dress glove). Such a heavy example attests to the assigned era.. This ring is from a Private Cambs, Collection pre 1970's (Just some 10 miles from the Cave structure of Royston and close to the Templar stronghold at Baldock Hert). Notes - Third Crusade: Attribution: 1187 - 1197 In 1187, Saladin, Sultan of Egypt (Remember "Ra" Sun God) , conquered Jerusalem after nearly a century under Christian rule, following the Battle of Hattin. After the Christians surrendered the city, Saladin spared the civilians and for the most part left churches and shrines untouched to be able to collect ransom money from the Franks. Several thousand apparently were not redeemed and probably were sold into slavery . Saladin is remembered respectfully in both European and Islamic sources as a man who "always stuck to his promise and was loyal." The reports of Saladin's victories shocked Europe. Pope Gregory VIII called for a crusade, which was led by several of Europe's most important leaders: Philip II of France, Richard I of England (aka Richard the Lionheart), and Frederick I, Holy Roman Emperor. Frederick drowned in Cilicia in 1190, leaving an unstable alliance between the English and the French. Before his arrival in the Holy Land, Richard captured the island of Cyprus from the Byzantines in 1191. Cyprus would serve as a Crusader base for centuries to come, and would remain in Western European hands until the Ottoman Empire conquered the island from Venice in 1571. After a long siege , Richard the Lionheart recap...
